چکیده

Redox-inactive metal ions play crucial roles in tuning the reactivity of oxygen-containing metal complexes and metalloenzymes such as the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) in photosystem II (PSII) and its small-molecule mimics. In PSII, a Ca ion is part of the tetrameric Mn cluster, Mn4CaO5, and is integral to the water oxidation catalysis and evolution of oxygen by the OEC. Several different functional roles have been proposed for this Ca cofactor based on intense enzymatic and model studies, such as modulation of the reduction potential of the manganese center, and enhancement of the nucleophilic reactivity of water or hydroxide bound to the Ca ion. Interestingly, the only other redox-inactive metal ion capable of replacing the Ca center and maintaining O2 evolution is Sr.

Metal–oxygen adducts (Mx Ox, x=1 or 2), such as metal– superoxo, –peroxo, and –oxo species, are key intermediates often detected in the catalytic cycles of dioxygen activation by metalloenzymes. In biomimetic and synthetic chemistry, numerous Mx Ox complexes have been prepared and characterized with various physicochemical methods as structural and functional models of enzymes. Among the Mx O2 ...

QM/MM computational studies of substrate water binding to the oxygen-evolving centre of photosystem II.

This paper reports computational studies of substrate water binding to the oxygen-evolving centre (OEC) of photosystem II (PSII), completely ligated by amino acid residues, water, hydroxide and chloride. The calculations are based on quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics hybrid models of the OEC of PSII, recently developed in conjunction with the X-ray crystal structure of PSII from the cyanoba...

The role of metals in production and scavenging of reactive oxygen species in photosystem II.

Metal ions play a crucial role in enzymatic reactions in all photosynthetic organisms such as cyanobacteria, algae and plants. It well known that metal ions maintain the binding of substrate in the active site of the metalloenzymes and control the redox activity of the metalloenzyme in the enzymatic reaction. A large pigment-protein complex, PSII, known to serve as a water-plastoquinone oxidore...

Artificial synthetic Mn(IV)Ca-oxido complexes mimic the oxygen-evolving complex in photosystem II.

A novel family of heteronuclear Mn(IV)Ca-oxido complexes containing Mn(IV)Ca-oxido cuboidal moieties and reactive water molecules on Ca(2+) have been synthesized and characterized to mimic the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) of photosystem II (PSII) in nature.

Computational studies of the O(2)-evolving complex of photosystem II and biomimetic oxomanganese complexes.

In recent years, there has been considerable interest in studies of catalytic metal clusters in metalloproteins based on Density Functional Theory (DFT) quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) hybrid methods. These methods explicitly include the perturbational influence of the surrounding protein environment on the structural/functional properties of the catalytic centers. In conjunction ...
